A beautiful rustic outdoors wedding at Kilrie Granary, Kirkcaldy

Rebecca and Kieran admit to being indecisive at the best of times so planning a wedding with all the choices that requires was pretty tough.

However, they knew from the very start they wanted plenty of greenery and their wedding to have a very rustic look with lots of DIY details.

And when they found their venue Kilrie Granary it all started falling into place.

Rebecca and Kieran first met while they were both working as swimming teachers in Dundee during their student days and had been together for four years before their romantic Austrian proposal.

“Kieran proposed to me during a holiday in Vienna in 2019 on top of the Danube Tower,” remembers the bride.

Returning home the couple set out to decide their wedding style, vision, date and venue and happened upon somewhere really special in Kilrie Granary.

“We went on an open day to a venue nearby to us and we just instantly fell in love with all the open green space, the pond, surrounding grounds and the granary itself,” smiles Rebecca.

“It felt so special as it was a venue that was slightly less well known and only hosts a wedding per week so having exclusive use for the whole weekend was brilliant.”

The creative couple ensured they had lots of DIY details in their big day, from crates to blanket stands, decorated jars and bunting flags to order of the day signage and centrepieces.

They even grew some of their own flowers and plants for the pots and confetti pouches.

Getting married in the time of Covid meant only Rebecca’s mum was allowed to go dress shopping with her but she still loved the experience.

“My bridesmaid got bombarded with all the pictures and videos from each shop!” she says.

“We went to five bridal shops and they were each incredible at helping you on your journey to find your dream dress.”

Rebecca had an idea of what style she wanted before she went shopping but within 10 minutes of stepping into the first boutique she had totally changed her mind based on what she suited.

She eventually found her beautiful off the shoulder fishtail gown in Glasgow’s Aimee Bridal Couture; the ‘Miles’ gown from Madi Lane.

While the dress itself was quite simple, detail was added in its detachable cape with 3D flowers. Gorgeous!

And this stylish bride accessorised with a Richard Designs circlet in her hair which she found in Kudos Bridal in Dunfermline.

This wedding truly was a team effort with all the bridal party and both sides of their immediate family spending hours helping set up all the furniture and props the day before.

Then they all enjoyed a dinner of pizza at the venue before the bride and groom went their separate ways for a relaxing night with their best man, usher and bridesmaid.

The morning of the big day there was still some last minute arrangements to take care of as a lot of the decorations had been moved indoors overnight incase it rained.

Then after that Rebecca and her bridesmaid had lots of fun in hair and make-up.

In true 007 style Rebecca arrived to her wedding in a family friend’s beautiful Aston Martin – very cool before she walked down the aisle to a string quartet playing Cannon in D.

“I actually didn’t feel nervous,” she says. “I just felt radiant seeing all my friends and family beaming as my dad and I walked down the aisle.”

Rebecca and Kieran were lucky that the rain held off and they were able to hold their ceremony outside.

“That was our dream wedding style and Kilrie has the most stunning ground ever,” she says.

“However, it came with the added bonus that by being outside no masks need to be worn and it turned out to be a tropical day.

“It was a wedding during Covid, however, not a wedding you will look back on in 10 years thinking it was during Covid as it was so normal being outside.”

The couple stuck to traditional vows and felt really emotional saying them.

Following the ceremony the couple entertained their guests with a drinks reception and lots of lawn games while the string quartet played on.

“We served Champagne and had our caterer Lazy Sunday make grazing style boxes filled with charcuterie, homemade sausage rolls, cheeses with bread and chutney, garlic dough balls, wee scotch eggs and wee cheese scones,” says Rebecca.

When the couple returned from having their photos taken (posing with that awesome car of course), it was time for the speeches.

Rebecca remembers, “all the smiles from the guests who could each relate to all of the speeches.” Then Lazy Sunday served up an amazing plated three-course meal.

And for a twist on the traditional after-dinner dancing it was on to a silent headphone disco al fresco.

“It hadn’t been our original plan but it was the best thing possible as it suited every single one of our guests who ranged in ages,” explains Rebecca.

“Both myself and my husband kept taking our headphones off to just soak in the moment of all our friends and families all dancing together to completely different songs.

“The best part of being outside – we had the biggest dancefloor ever; the grass lawn!”

Now it’s all over Rebecca says “Married life is brilliant.

“Watching our wedding video back we and our guests honestly don’t stop laughing and smiling all day.”

At times she says planning their big day felt “overwhelming,” but they did it in stages which made the whole process much less daunting.

She advises other couples to not sweat all the decisions.

“Just choose whatever you both want as it’s your day and your guests will love all the things that make your wedding so special,” she adds.

“Sounds crazy but enjoy some of the planning – you feel empty when it’s over and you are not always planning.”
