A bright and stylish micro-wedding at Blythswood Square, Glasgow

Like so many other couples Covid-19 meant Vicki and Andy had to overhaul their wedding completely.

They were meant to tie the knot at The Waterside Hotel in West Kilbride with guests attending from all over the world.

But the pandemic led to them opting for a gorgeous al fresco wedding in Blythswood Square with their six-month-old daughter Lucie and only a handful of guests in attendance.

Despite the stress of all the changes the couple are just delighted to be married.

As the bride says, “This wedding really made us appreciate the important things; we are married, we are a family, and we are healthy and safe.”

Here they tell us all about their day, captured by the talented Joy Story

“We had originally booked our wedding for the same date in August 2020 at The Waterside but when the pandemic hit in March we quickly decided to postpone this until 2021,” explains Vicki.

However, as restrictions eased, they decided they just wanted to be married however they could.

That of course meant a drastically reduced guestlist.

With the change of plan the couple booked Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel as they planned to get married in the square’s garden but loved the option to tie the knot indoors if the weather didn’t play ball.

Switching venues meant they overhauled their plan for a beachy vibe and instead opted for strong, punchy pops of colour with gorgeous sunflowers, gerberas and orange and yellow roses in Vicki’s bouquet.

And the bride totally changed her dress too from a beautiful gown from Anne Priscilla Bridal to a simple and sophisticated sequined number from ASOS.

“Although practicality shouldn’t necessarily be a major reason for choosing a dress, it was easy to wear when holding my six-month-old daughter and most importantly was really comfortable!”

Vicki finished off her bridal look with a super-sweet custom necklace with three rings and Andrew, Victoria and baby Lucie’s names engraved on them.

“I also wore a twist bracelet I purchased on our last holiday to Greece, a nod to our beach theme in the middle of Glasgow!” says Vicki.

The stripped back plan meant a lot of the stresses of guest lists, table plans and stag and hen dos were removed, allowing them to focus on the actual wedding ceremony.

“We also hadn’t planned on having had our daughter but she was a very welcome surprise,” smiles Vicki. 

On the morning of the big day the bride just remembers being happy.

“There wasn’t going to be a ‘performance’ or worry about hundreds of guests or something going wrong that I would have to deal with,” she says.

“The sun was shining, we were allowed to get married (finally) and it was all going to be great.

She remembers her walk down the outdoor aisle to Bill Withers’ Lovely Day with tourists looking on as all being a bit surreal.

But saying the vows they’d written themselves for their humanist ceremony was a “uniquely special” experience.

“It was lovely to know how much we meant to each other as it can be so easy to take the other for granted,” says Vicki.

“Funnily enough, the closing part of our vows were nearly identical; our special phrase that we’ve said to each other for years.”

Vicki’s sister and her soon-to-be brother-in-law performed the maid of honour and best man duties and her parents, aunt, uncle, and godfather were all present for the ceremony and champagne reception in the garden.

Then Vicki’s immediate family joined the newlyweds and baby Lucie for a gorgeous meal in the Blythswood.

“Everything was relaxed and easy,” says Vicki.

“It was all very personal and comfortable. It was unforgettable.”

And looking back Vicki says the highlight was definitely having their daughter there.

“Although she won’t remember it, we will and we have the most beautiful photos of her with us,” she says.

And she advises to-be-weds to focus on what is important to them.

“That may be the location, having hundreds of people present or simply the act of getting married,” she says.

“At the end of the day, we wanted a special ceremony and beautiful photos to have forever.

“The only people you have to please are yourselves, just make yourselves happy and don’t get hung up on every tiny detail.

“If you’re marrying the person you love it’ll be an amazing day regardless.”
