A colourful and intimate Scottish/Asian fusion wedding at Cornhill Castle, Biggar

Kirsty and Kasim are a pretty relaxed couple so they took everything in their stride, despite some difficulties when planning their gorgeous wedding.

They first met at a party while Kirsty was chatting to his brother Amar.

Then after six years together Kas had a ring ready to propose on holiday in Kirsty’s favourite place Rome.

Then Covid hit and their holiday had to be cancelled. So it was plan B.

“We had bought our first house together right before lockdown, and when we finally moved into our house Kasim proposed,” says Kirsty.

“It was the first weekend in the house, surrounded by boxes and with Italian takeaway.”

And this groom had a very specific idea in mind for his fiancée’s engagement ring, designing one with a black diamond at Diamond Heaven.

Getting engaged during lockdown meant finding a venue wasn’t easy.

“Some weren’t getting back to us, some were fully booked, and some didn’t want to carry out weddings with only 20 people (which was the law at the time),” says Kirsty.

But when they saw Cornhill Castle it ticked all their boxes.

They wanted a venue that would cater to a small wedding because even if restrictions eased, they would still keep their numbers small.

“We also wanted a visually stunning venue so we could get beautiful pictures,” says Kirsty.

“When we went to visit, we knew Cornhill Castle was the one. It was like a fairytale castle.”

The couple set out without having any particular theme or colour scheme and Kas decided to keep his tartan a surprise for Kirsty so it would have been difficult to settle on a theme.

“However, as we progressed we realised we favoured thistles and dark blues and greys,” she says.

Kirsty initially thought she wanted a colourful wedding dress and had seen some stunning pink and blue gowns online but the more she looked she started to stress.

Add to that, she was looking for an Asian gown as well and the pressure was on.

But then she went to Wed2B having seen two of their dresses on social media.

“Sadly they weren’t in stock but I told the lady in the shop what I was after and she got a dress from the back room and I loved it,” she says.

“As soon as I tried it on, I knew it was the one.”

With her Scottish dress sorted, she found her Asian outfit online and she and her mother-in-law found accessories in Lalli Fashion Glasgow.

She loved traditional red dresses but felt red didn’t suit her, so she found a stunning white and gold gown with a red dupatta – “the best of both worlds.”

Kirsty and Kas travelled to Cornhill the night before the wedding and had a lovely meal together before going their separate ways.

“Kas slept like he always does, like a log!” says the bride.

“I on the other hand saw pretty much every hour on the clock. I was excited and couldn’t wait for the day to start.”

The morning was a hive of excitement and then they realised they had forgotten the marriage schedule.

“Our best man and bridesmaid drove to our house to collect it,” says Kirsty.

“Everyone kept telling me ‘don’t worry’ but I wasn’t worried at all.

“We aren’t too far from the venue and knew where it was. I felt like I should have been more worried but we are both very chilled out people so we had a laugh about it.

“And it also gave me more time to get ready!”

Kirsty was walked down the aisle by her brother to River Flows in You by Yiruma and felt really emotional “but in a good way. I was so excited to see Kas in his tartan and tried really hard not to cry.”

The couple had a humanist ceremony conducted by Chris Grey.

“He performed a great ceremony and added in a lot of nice personal touches,” says Kirsty.

“We drank from a quaich and did a handfasting. We were both pretty emotional during our vows but managed to get through it.”

The atmosphere at their reception was very relaxed.

They kept their numbers intimate with only 15 guests and loved that they were able to chat and dance with everyone.

“Many, many shots were consumed throughout the night and it finished off in the traditional Scottish way, with Loch Lomond.”

Now that they’re husband and wife, Kirsty says, “It feels brilliant to be married but we both cannot believe that our special day has been and gone already!”

“Kirsty and Kasim were just a lovely couple to work with. It was a very interesting wedding and they were just so chilled out and welcoming. The day after we went back for more photos with Kirsty in her Asian dress.”
