The A-Z of Netherbyres House
This post has been provided by Netherbyres House
Our A-Z of Netherbyres weddings will give you the lowdown on everything you need to know about having your nuptials at Netherbyres.
All weather venue
We’re lucky to have great grounds so that if the weather plays ball, most of the day can be outside. Fancy having your ceremony outdoors? We’ve got plenty of places for that. Choose from a sunny spot on the front lawn or a more shady corner amongst the trees.
But you don’t need to get too obsessed with looking at the forecast as a bit of drizzle won’t dampen things, the house is so dreamy that it’s not a bad thing to have to stay indoors all day.
Bojangles Bar
Named after our beloved feline (more on her a bit later), Bojangles Bar is the place to have your drinks reception on those sunny (or at least dry) Scottish days.
You can find out more about how we turned our old Summer House in to a bar on our blog.
Catering
From three course sit down meals to street food vans, and everything in between.
We offer a blank canvas wedding, so you can choose to bring in the suppliers you want rather than having to choose from a pre-approved list. Although we’ve got lots of great caterers we can recommend if you need some help.
Dining Room
Our opulent dining room seats 18 guests, so there’s room for all staying guests to eat together. We’ll serve you up a two course meal in here the night before the wedding. It’s also the place to grab a bit of brekky before the big day, and soak up the hangover the morning after.
It’s also a great place to host your wedding meal if you thinking of an intimate microwedding, like Zara and Mark did in 2021.
Exclusive use
You won’t have to share the space with other guests, it’s all yours for an unforgettable weekend.
And as we only do a maximum of one wedding per week during the Spring, Summer and Autumn months, each one feels unique and memorable.
Flamingos
You might have noticed we’ve got a thing for flamingos. In fact, birds in general pop up all over Netherbyres, from our wallpaper to perching on pillars (pictured below by Northern Aye Photography). We just can’t get enough of the little feathered fellows.
Grand Hall
This is where most of the magic happens on your wedding day; from indoor ceremonies to the meal, and by night time it’s your dancefloor.
Designed to look like the bow of a ship, the double-height ceiling has to be seen in person to be believed.
History
Although we have pretty modern interiors, there’s a whole lot of history in this house. Built right on the cusp of the Victorian era in 1836, and extended in the 1860’s. You can read all about it in our blog on the History of Netherbyres.
Inclusive
We love love. All types of love. And we strive to make sure we’re inclusive to all – you won’t find any ‘Groom’s lounges’ here, and you can stand on whichever side of the altar you would like! All of our spaces are for brides, grooms or whoever you identify as.
Jangles
Or Mrs Bojangles to give her her full title. Also known as Jingles, Mrs B, BJ. You might catch a glimpse of her impressive tail as she surveys the grounds during viewings.
Kegs, barrels and bottles
We like to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible (more on that in our blog about sustainability) and so use local suppliers wherever we can. Tempest Brew Co supply our beer, and we get our cider from Dunbar based Thistly Cross cider.
We have a great range of wines to suit all tastes and budgets from Liberty Wines, and we’ve made sure to have some English fizz on the list.
And we’re partial to cocktail too – from classic Martinis to more modern aperitivo’s like Italicus Spritz (one of our personal favourites). And we can even create you some personalised cocktails, just let us know your favourite flavours and we’ll do the rest.
Lounge
Speaking of cocktails, what better place to enjoy one than sitting on our sumptuous velvet sofas, or on a bar stool at (probably) the most stylish bar in Scotland.
Our lounge is the place you can hang out with your friends and family the night before the wedding. On the wedding day, it’s where we have indoor drinks receptions, and by night it’s the place to grab a drink or rest those dancing feet.
Mike
One half of S&M, on a wedding weekend you’ll generally find Mike behind the bar, knocking up a negroni or serving up a champers.
He also looks after all of the maintenance of the house and gardens, designs all of our marketing materials and menus, and creates the playlists you’ll hear blaring out at the bar.
Netherbyres Estate
The house sits within the Netherbyres estate, a 75-acre estate surrounded by woodland and fields, so there’s plenty of lovely intimate spots to capture some romantic couple shots.
The estate is home to the famous Netherbyres Walled Garden, a rare elliptical walled garden dating back to the 1730’s, which our couples have the opportunity to get exclusive access to for some photos.
Original features
Our 1830’s mansion has them in abundance. From original marble fireplaces to impressive stained glass windows and some incredible ornate corniced ceilings.
Plants
So we have a little bit an obsession with plants. They’re everywhere, and Mike can’t stop buying more. There’s a strong botanical theme going through our interiors as well, a nod back to the history of the house which was at one time a home for retired gardeners.
Quirky
If you haven’t already noticed, we’ve got a thing for quirky and bold interiors. Patterned wallpaper, bright colours and eclectic furniture are just a few of our favourite things. We love mixing old and new – we’ve some lovely old pieces of furniture that have been handed down to us from our grandparents, like the vintage drinks cabinet in the photo below, which contrasts with the more modern bits such as our bright velvet sofas and eye catching prints.
And it’s not just the main rooms that get the stylish treatment – each of our guest bathrooms have their own design including bold wallpapers and art.
Relaxed
We’re all about laid back, fun weddings where you get to hang out with your family and friends. Weddings really shouldn’t be stressful. If you choose the right suppliers to work with, then the day should go off without a hitch and you can enjoy yourself chatting to friends rather than worrying about what happens next.
Sarah
The other half of S&M.
The person you’ll get if you send us an enquiry, and who will work with you to design your dream wedding in the run up to the day. I also manage our social media and website, and design our interiors.
On your wedding day, I’m your event coordinator, making sure your tables are set up just how you want them, chatting with your suppliers and generally making sure everything goes to plan.
Tipi
Our 7m tipi sits alongside Bojangles Bar, giving a bit of shelter from the sun on a blazing hot day, or a place to duck under if it starts to drizzle. We’ve got firepits beside it to warm up with when the temperature starts to drop, giving the space a real festival vibe.
Unique
We’re often told when people come to view that there’s no where else like Netherbyres in Scotland. And that’s exactly why we created it. When we were looking for our own wedding venue in 2015, we couldn’t find exactly what we wanted, which was a big house where our closest friends and family could stay for the weekend, with a modern style. So we decided we’d create our own venue which was just that!
Vows
No matter what type of ceremony you fancy having, we’ve got you covered. We had a Humanist wedding and are big fans of their fun and relaxed nature. If you need some recommendations, we’ve got a list of great Celebrants we’re already working with.
If you prefer a Civil Ceremony, we can put you in touch with the local Registrar. And if a religious ceremony is more your thing, there are churches a short walk away in Eyemouth.
Find out more about your ceremony options.
Weekender
A day goes far too quickly. That’s why we think weddings should last a whole weekend. Arrive on Friday afternoon and enjoy drinks in the bar or garden before we cook you up a meal in the dining room. You don’t have to rush off on Sunday either. Have brunch before your leisurely check out time of 11.30am.
Xtra time
And if a weekend just isn’t enough, we’ve got options to extend your stay for additional nights. So there’s plenty of time to squeeze in an extra game of croquet on the lawn.
Yes! to (almost) anything
We’re all about flexibility, so we’ll say yes to (almost) anything. So if you want to bring along a table of whiskies you’ve been collecting for years, or have your beloved pooch as ring-bearer, we’re game.
Zzzzzzzzz
Last but not least, it’s the place where you catch some Zzzz’s. We have nine en suite bedrooms all decorated in their own individual style, with incredibly comfortable beds (so we’re told).
Could this just be your perfect venue?
