The hottest wedding décor trends 2021

Guestlists may be reduced for now but that doesn’t mean you need to compromise on your wedding décor.

In fact, smaller headcounts have allowed couples the freedom to really push the boat out when it comes to styling their big day.

Greater personalisation, opulent floral arrangements and a sense of fun have become the order of the day.

Kate Symington of Gloam, and Heather Spurling McGowan of Make Believe Events share their insider knowledge of the trends that are going to be huge this year.

The impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on weddings cannot be understated.

With each fresh briefing couples have been left scrabbling to postpone or re-imagine their day.

“The emotional turmoil, the diary management upheaval, and the pivoting from large to micro has been intense for all,” acknowledges Gloam’s creative director.

“There have been tears, frustrations, and disappointments for sure, but we have seen some beautiful things emerging too.

“And these are the things that we believe will continue to blossom well into 2021 and beyond.”

Keep it authentic

According to Kate the “rule book” has been thrown out the window.

“In 2021 we will see couples do exactly what they want with a push to have authentic celebrations that truly reflect them as a couple,” she says.

“While they may have to deal with on-going Covid restrictions, they won’t be constrained by feeling they need to do things a certain way, especially to please others.”

Kate says there will be freedom to go big on detail, have the suppliers they want and to wear what they want.

Pitch up

The swing towards wee weddings has kept Make Believe Events’ Below Canvas Tipis very busy.

According to the company’s managing director Heather, “It is clear to see there is more flexibility with numbers in outside spaces and as our tipis are flexible to have all or part of their sides up, we can offer a great setting for a micro-wedding.”

Ordinarily the company can join multiple tipis for gatherings of up to 200 guests but right now a single tipi is the perfect setting for a micro-wedding.

“Our tipis are the perfect blank canvas for décor and offer an informal setting for a wedding,” Heather says.

“We have lots of sites we can recommend but we can also come to you.

“Many people have been using family gardens for celebrations.”

Keep it sustainable

2021 will see us step away from imported, out of season flowers and scouring craft shops for the oh-so-vital décor details that will ultimately be binned post-wedding.

Instead, Kate says couples will increasingly ask suppliers to keep it seasonal, local and sustainable.

“They are requesting locally grown seasonal flowers, and they want to eat with the seasons,” she says.

“They are working with hire companies to remove the need to buy things they don’t need.”

Tablescaping dreams

Expect couples to bring their A-game this year when it comes to the wedding breakfast table.

With fewer guests to feed you can turn your back on the bog standard tableware and go all out.

It could be the introduction of more colour or a table abundant with flowers and tasteful swags – go wild with your décor dreams.

“We know we will see couples ramp up the personalisation when it comes to tablescaping,” says Kate.

“They will be able to go that extra mile when it comes to styling how their guests dine.

“We will see colourful glasswear, glorious linens, and florals to die for.”

Please be seated

A move away from another décor staple – the chair cover – has led Make Believe Events to widen their offering and invest in these gorgeous oak coloured crossback chairs (pictured above).

“There is no doubt that our Chiavari chairs are still one of our most popular items,” says Heather.

“However, as everyone is looking to move away from chair covers there is more of a demand for different chair varieties.

“The moment we saw these we knew we had to have them!”

Whether you’re planning a rustic affair or going down the vintage route, these would be perfect.

Totally lit

After months of uncertainty and restrictions we all need some fun and we are loving these cute neon signs.

Make Believe Events received their newest set during lockdown 1.0 and their popularity shows no sign of abating.

“It seems that everyone is itching to inject some fun into their weddings and our neon signs are exactly that,” says Heather.

“They are for the couple who are looking to do things a little differently and who don’t take themselves too seriously – and I think everyone is ready to really let their hair down and have some fun with their days.”

You can choose from 11 signs from the range including ‘Belter’, ‘Pure Dead Brilliant’, ‘Yaldi’, ‘Gie it Ladly’ and ‘Did ye aye?’
